Day 24
10 minutes of choir instruction for a disadvantaged child in Canada

HARMONY FOR ALL

Bringing Music to Children in Low-Income Households

Music has the ability to bring us joy and comfort. Imagine the smiles on the faces of children in low-income households when voices come together in harmony. In Ontario the elementary music curriculum has not been updated since 2009, there is no specified length of time to be allotted to music instruction and there is no requirement for elementary teachers to have music qualifications. Music classes in Simcoe County schools have been inconsistent, with some students receiving excellent instruction and others only the basics. Quality music education can lead to better language comprehension, improved memory, and an ability to solve problems creatively. All these factors point to the importance of quality music instruction for all students. Unfortunately, music lessons are often out of reach for families who struggle with the day-to-day costs of providing food and shelter for their children. Give the gift of music to the children of Simcoe County and watch them flourish and grow.

Background

Access to quality music education has many benefits for children’s academic, physical, social, and emotional development, and it is essential to ensure that all children have access to these opportunities. However, children from low-income households are significantly less likely to participate in arts activities compared to their more affluent peers due to financial constraints. This can have adverse effects on their development and puts those in higher-income households at a greater advantage. Music can be a valuable tool for improving academic outcomes and disrupting the cycle of poverty. Research shows that music education has a positive impact on cognitive development (especially in the areas of language, mathematics and reasoning skills), as well as physical, social, and emotional development in children, which can lead to improved outcomes in later life. According to a study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology, participation in choir programs can improve children’s self-esteem, social skills, and emotional regulation. A report by the National Endowment for the Arts, notes that access to arts education is associated with higher academic achievement, increased civic engagement, and improved overall well-being. The need for a choir that is accessible to all children, regardless of their financial situation, is therefore crucial for addressing prevalent socio-economic disparities and to help develop the skills necessary for children to realize their full potential.

The good deed

A choir is a powerful expression of the human voice, and the power of music is amplified when voices come together in harmony. Together we can help create a more inclusive and equitable society where opportunities for growth and development are not limited by income. The Simcoe Youth Choir is for young people in Grades 2-8 and is geared toward helping empower children, build confidence/self-esteem, develop music skills while providing opportunities for brain development and growth, and build community and connection. Our GOOD DEED will enable children in financial need to experience these benefits without the stigma often felt by being identified as a recipient of charitable support. Music has the power to uplift and transform lives through acquisition of music reading and performance skills, and creative problem-solving skills and a sense of connection, and perseverance. With your support we can unlock the potential of these young minds and help them build a brighter future.
